Summary and next steps
AREDS2 is a question about a specific formula and AMD stage. Current or former smoking is an important part of the product review.
- Confirm the eye diagnosis and whether the evidence applies.
- Bring the full ingredient panel and serving directions.
- Review other medicines and supplements before choosing a product.

AREDS2 is a stage-specific supplement question for an eye appointment, not a general vision vitamin for every older adult. Current and former smokers should pay particular attention to beta-carotene in older AREDS formulas.
Start with the diagnosis and stage
Ask the eye-care professional whether the evidence applies to your AMD findings. Supplements do not prevent all AMD, clear cataracts or replace injections and monitoring. Do not decide eligibility from age, smoking history alone, or an online checklist.
NEI distinguishes the studied AREDS2 formulation from the older beta-carotene-containing AREDS formulation, which increases lung-cancer risk in people who smoke or used to smoke. Confirm the actual ingredient panel rather than relying on the front label.
Bring the complete label to the appointment
- Product name and exact ingredient panel
- Serving size and instructions on that product
- Other vitamins and supplements already taken
- Current medicines and relevant medical history, discussed privately
- Questions about suitability, interactions and tolerability
A name such as eye health or macular support does not establish that a product matches a studied formulation. Do not assemble a dose by combining products or apply one bottle’s capsule count to another.
Keep benefit claims in context
The AREDS trials studied defined groups and outcomes. A relative reduction in progression is not a guarantee of clearer reading or an individual prediction of blindness. Ask what benefit is relevant to your eyes and what follow-up is needed.
New distortion or another vision change needs clinical advice; it is not a signal to increase vitamins or wait for a supplement to work.
Compare prices only after suitability is confirmed
Use current quotes for the exact product and serving basis. Compare bottle contents, required daily units under the verified plan, delivery charges and usable duration. This page provides no current market-wide price bands or brand ranking.
If the cost is difficult, ask the eye team or pharmacist about suitable options. A cheaper product is not equivalent merely because the label uses AREDS2 in large print.
Agree on a usable plan
Ask how to handle possible side effects, duplicate ingredients and changes in other medicines. Do not treat a three-day trial, a home score or an overnight change in clarity as proof of benefit or failure.
Keep the agreed product and instructions together, and ask for clarification whenever a replacement product differs.
